Information on Awards, EPSRC DTG Funding and University Funding

Student Excellence Award (SEA)

  • includes University and EPSRC DTG funds; each application should be for EITHER EPSRC DTG or University Studentship funding
  • is managed at the Faculty level with Faculties setting their own deadlines for completion of applications
  • a primary use of this funding is to make early commitments to excellent students
  • funds can be used flexibly by the Faculty and can be used to fully support a studentship if required

Research Excellence Award (REA)

  • includes University and EPSRC DTG funds; each application should be for EITHER EPSRC DTG or University Studentship funding
  • is managed at the Faculty level with Faculties setting their own deadlines for completion of applications
  • a primary use of this funding is to fund excellent projects with an early deadline to ensure time to recruit a student
  • a maximum of 10kpa can be applied for

John Anderson Research Awards (JARA)

  • includes University funds only and is managed at the University level
  • the funding is for named excellent students (1st class or Masters with Distinction) and the student details must be completed on the case for support (section 9)
  • a maximum of 10kpa can be applied for
  • applications must be submitted on the on-line system by the deadline of 28 June 2013. Decisions to be announced by the 30 July 2013

 

EPSRC DTG Funded Studentships

  • Only staff in Faculties / Departments that hold EPSRC research grants that have contributed to the DTG award are eligible to apply
  • UK students are eligible for fees and stipend. EU students are eligible for fees only studentships. EU students are also eligible for a stipend if they have been resident in the UK for 3 years immediately prior to starting their PhD. International students are not eligible. (Please note that it is the responsibility of the academic to select an eligible student, failure to do so may result in the removal of the studentship)
  • Studentships should be 3.5 years in duration
  • DTG funding must cover at least 50% of a studentship (i.e. the sum of fees and stipend)
  • DTG funding should cover the tuition fees

University Funded Studentships

  • Staff in all Faculties are eligible to apply
  • Home/EU and Overseas students are eligible
  • Funding is provided for 3 years only (studentships may be longer if the additional period is funded from other sources)
